How to Build a Portfolio Website on WordPress: Step-by-Step Guide

A portfolio website is your own home on the internet, and clients can find and judge your work without a marketplace in between. You do not need to code. This guide shows seven steps to build a simple, secure and professional portfolio site on WordPress, with a launch checklist to check your work.

In short: get a domain and hosting, install WordPress, choose a light theme, add five core pages, present three real projects, and handle SEO and security before launch.

Why have your own portfolio website

Marketplace profiles are useful, but they follow the platform’s layout and rules. Your own site gives you a permanent home for your work, lets you tell your story in your own words, and gives clients an easy link to share. It also shows that you can handle the basics of publishing on the web.

What you need before you start

ItemWhat to do
Domain nameChoose something short and easy to spell, ideally your name or brand
HostingPick a reliable host with backups and SSL; compare plans on the official sites
WordPressMost hosts can install it for you in a few clicks
ContentThree to six best projects, a short bio, a photo and contact details

Step-by-step: build your portfolio site

Step 1: Install WordPress and set the basics

After installation, log in to the dashboard. In Settings, set your site title and tagline, and set the permalinks to “Post name” so links look clean. Delete the sample post, sample page and any plugins you do not need.

Step 2: Choose a simple theme

Pick a lightweight theme with a clean layout and good mobile display. Avoid themes that load slowly with many animations. Never install pirated themes; they often contain hidden malicious code, as explained in our guide to protecting your WordPress site.

Step 3: Create the essential pages

  • Home: a one-line promise, your best three projects and a button to contact you
  • Portfolio: project pages with the goal, your role, tools and the result
  • About: who you are, your experience and how you work
  • Services: what you offer and how the process works
  • Contact: an email address or form, and your social links
  • Privacy Policy: required if you collect any information through forms

Step 4: Present each project well

For every project, add a short case study: the client’s need, your approach, the final design and what changed. Use clear images and write alt text. For design inspiration and structure, see how to build a graphic design portfolio.

Step 5: Add basic SEO

Give each page a unique title and meta description, use one H1 per page, compress images and add internal links. Our basic SEO guide covers these steps.

Step 6: Secure and back up

Turn on two-factor authentication, keep everything updated and set automatic backups. These habits protect the work you have just built.

Step 7: Test before launch

  • Open every page on your phone and on a computer
  • Click every button and link
  • Submit your contact form and confirm you receive the message
  • Read all text aloud to catch mistakes
