Upwork vs Fiverr for Bangladeshi Freelancers: Fees, Payments and Which to Choose

Split comparison of a service storefront and a job board

If you are starting out as a freelancer in Bangladesh, you have probably asked this: Upwork or Fiverr? Both can bring international clients, but they work in very different ways. This guide explains the difference in plain language, compares fees using the platforms’ own published figures, and ends with a short quiz to help you decide.

Short answer: Fiverr is closer to a shop window, where clients find your packaged service (a “gig”). Upwork is closer to a job board, where you apply to client projects with proposals. Many freelancers eventually use both.

🎓 Choosing a platform is step two. Step one is a skill clients will pay for. If you want structured, project-based learning, see the courses at Tech Pulse.

How each platform works

Fiverr: clients come to you

You create a gig, for example “I will design a logo for your business”, with a title, images, packages and prices. Clients browse, compare and buy. Your gig title, image and reviews decide whether you get orders.

Upwork: you go to the clients

Clients post jobs. You send proposals, and the client interviews and hires. Winning work depends on how well your proposal matches the job, and on your profile and reviews.

Getting paid in Bangladesh

Both platforms let you withdraw earnings using a supported method. The exact options, fees and exchange rates depend on the platform, your account and your bank, and they change over time. Typical routes people use include:

  • Direct bank transfer to a local bank account, where the platform supports it for your account.
  • A third-party payout provider such as Payoneer, which gives you a receiving account and then pays out to a local bank.
  • Local wallet or remittance routes offered by some providers.

Before you choose: check the withdrawal fee, the currency conversion rate, how long it takes, and whether your bank accepts the method. Use the withdrawal settings inside your own account as the final source of truth.

Pros and cons at a glance

Fiverr

  • ➕ Easy to start; buyers can find you without proposals
  • ➕ Good for productised services with clear prices
  • ➖ Heavy competition in popular categories; a flat fee on all earnings

Upwork

  • ➕ Wide range of project types, including hourly and long-term work
  • ➕ Direct engagement with clients through proposals and interviews
  • ➖ Proposals take effort and Connects have a cost; early wins can be slow

🎯 Quiz: which should you start with?

Answer yes or no in your head.

  1. Can you describe your service in one clear sentence with a fixed price?
  2. Do you enjoy writing short, personal messages to clients?
  3. Do you want to work with the same client for months?

  • Yes to question 1 only: start with Fiverr.
  • Yes to questions 2 and 3: start with Upwork.
  • Yes to all three: pick one first, get your first reviews, then add the other.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Opening several accounts on the same platform, which usually breaks the rules.
  • Taking clients off the platform to avoid fees. This breaks the terms and removes your payment protection.
  • Copying another seller’s gig or proposal word for word.
  • Underpricing so heavily that you cannot sustain the work.
